Who would have thought that Endau Rompin National Park has existed for almost 248 million years? Certainly worthy of a heritage status, lets enjoy the wonders that it offers, and (at the risk of sounding cliché) preserve it for the future generations.

My love affair with tofu or beancurd started when I first tasted Tau Foo Fah from the hawker who used to push his cart pass my grandfather’s old house at Jalan Ngee Heng. He would pass by every day to go to park at his regular spot in front of Johor Bahru’s former Chinatown food centre at Jalan Ungku Puan. This hawker sold his smooth, pudding-like version of beancurd sweetened with syrup as well as chilled or warm soyabean drinks. Tau Foo Fah from this hawker and his wife was such a regular treat that we even fondly nicknamed them “Beano.”

To me, soups always taste of home. That’s because I grew up on Cantonese soups, lovingly slow-boiled the traditional way over a charcoal stove. Grandma’s rich soup recipes with ingredients like lotus roots, old cucumbers, watercress, groundnuts, black-beans or herbs continue to be a favourite comfort food as they nourish and fortify the family like no other single dish does. I’m familiar with the goodness of simmered soups because in our house, hardly a day goes by without soup being served with meals.
